| "Calgary To Quito" "Calgary To Quito" was broadcast on CFCN (CTV Alberta) and on Bell ExpressVu Satellite on October 11th, 2004 The documentary examined the introduction of "water purifying technology" into rural Ecuador and other remote areas of the developing world. In much of the world, children do not have access to a safe supply of drinking water. The Bio-sand Water Filter, which purifies drinking water, on site, was invented by Dr. David Manz of Calgary. This simple, concrete device is changing the lives of millions of people. "Canada Jan" "Canada Jan" was produced in rural Dominican Republic in the spring of 2004. It tells the story of a remarkable woman by the name of Dr. Jan Tollefson. "Canada Jan", as she has been nicknamed by her friends in the DR, left her job as an emergency room physician to help the people of this impoverished island. Dr. Tollefson is not only taking the Bio-Sand water filters into the Dominican Republic she is also setting up training programs to teach local people how to make and service them. She is also building small but efficient pre-school buildings, latrines and LED lighting systems for people in remote villages. Haiti. Every year, Dr. Paul Davis treks 6 hours out of Port Au Prince to a tiny hillside village by the name of Bonne Fin. There, he provides free medical care for hundreds of Haitians with little access to medicine or a skilled doctor. "When I graduated from medical school I committed myself to helping poor people in the world" he told me along the way. That is exactly what he does for several weeks out of the year, leaving behind his medical practice and acreage home in Southern Alberta. We documented his work with children in a makeshift clinic in a church on the top of a mountain. Dr. Davis also makes regular trips to help destitute seniors in the city of Les Cayes. On several of his expeditions, Dr. Davis carries "Physician Travel Packs" from Health Partners International of Canada. It's an organisation that collects donated medicines and packages them for volunteer physicians to take into the developing world. Dr. Davis has dedicated his life to helping people... not only in Haiti.. but in many other countries as well. |

"For The Love Of Children"
They are the most imposing mountain peaks and passes in the world. Everest, the highest, has claimed the lives of many daring mountain climbers. The treacherous mountain passes that connect Nepal with Tibet have claimed the lives of many children. Tibetan children walk for days and weeks trying to get to Nepal and eventually to India and The Dalai Lama. Those that survive the treacherous journey often end up on the streets of Kathmandu where they congregate with Nepali children that are also homeless, hungry, and disheartened. On a hillside west of the Capital some of these children have found refuge in the care of a local Lama and a hostel built by supporters of the "For The Love Of Children Society of Alberta" Here they are fed and given an education. Their Nepali and Tibetan culture is nurtured. The Calgary based Society is financially supporting the centre and the daily Blind In Bombay..... Her name is Preeti. She was born somewhere in the slums of Bombay, without eyes and without a nose. At the age of six her parents abandoned her. Missionaries, working in this city of 20 million people, found Preeti. They also found money to pay for the seven operations needed construct something that would resemble a human face. The fact that she survived was remarkable, the fact that she can now read Braille and play with her friends at the Bombay School for Blind girls is a miracle. The 130 girls living at the school are learning how to survive in a world where it is difficult even for the most able bodied of individuals. Here they laugh and learn. They are taught how to take care of themselves. They are prepared for graduation, which includes having the confidence to go out into the world and lead productive lives. "For The Love Of Children" was broadcast in 2002. See More Documentaries.... |
